About Seville

Seville  (Sevilla) is the capital and largest city of the region of  Andalusia and the province of Seville.  Andalusia has an extensive history and other breathtaking locations such as Granada, Cordoba and Ronda. Malaga is another town that spawls along the coast. This page is dedicated to Seville, but if you can spare the time, do look more into these magical cities and towns. The Rock of Gibralter is only two hours away and may be worth the trip as well.

Seville is situated on the River Guadalquivir, in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Seville has a population of  690,000 as of 2016, and a metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, making it the largest city in Andalusia, the fourth-largest city in Spain. Its old town contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. The Seville harbor, located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, is the only river port in Spain. Seville experiences high temperatures in the summer, with daily maximums routinely above 35 °C (95 °F) in July and August.

The St. Mary of the See Cathedral was built from 1401 to 1519 after the Reconquista on the former site of the city’s mosque. It is the third largest cathedral in the world.  The interior is lavishly decorated, with a large quantity of gold. La Giralda is a tower attached to the Cathedral that dates back to the twelfth century.  Visitors can climb the tower by walking up a series of ramps that were previously used by officials who rode their horses to the top of the tower. The Alcázar facing the cathedral was developed from a previous Moorish Palace. Enhancements were continually added to the  palace for  over 500 years, the Christians used the influences of moorish architecture which is incredibly ornate. It is called  Mudéjar style. The series  Game of Thrones has shot many scenes at this location.

The Plaza de España in the Parque de María Luisa (María Luisa Park) was built by the architect Aníbal González for the 1929 Exposición Ibero-Americana. the glazed tiles that adorn the exterior are a great example of the craftwork that is a major part of Spanish culture. There are a few other neighborhoods that surround Seville and are a short walk away. La Macarena is one of those neighborhoods north of the city that offers lower-priced apartments for rent.
