About Santorini

There is a good reason why thousands of travelers visit Santorini each year. There is really no place like it. Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades.Santorini, officially called Thira is a half moon shaped island formed from a volcano in 1650 B.C. What is unique about this is that some of the island sank into the sea, including the crater. Luckily that last eruption occurred 3,600 years ago during the Minoan civilization.  The crater was submerged and is called caldera. Today boats can be taken to the area where the crater is submerged. The beauty of white, red, and black beaches, the crystal blue water, and the charming white houses make this a magical paradise. Here is the downside…there are many, many travelers, especially in the height of summer.

When visiting Greece, this island should be visited, at least once. It is suggested to go in early summer or fall. But if you plan to visit in summer, there is a way to enjoy the islands without the crowds. Every day, about 9,000 people from cruise ships land on the island, but there are things to do in a more peaceful, quieter setting. I highly suggest staying on the island for at least two nights as after 6pm, the place comes alive and the opportunity to see the sunset is unforgettable. Luckily you do not have to go to the most popular area of Oia to see that sunset. The island faces west so any area along that side of the island will do! Also during the day, there are other ways to avoid the crowds. Check out other parts of the islands, such as the village of Pyrgos. Pýrgos, Karterádes, Emporió, Ammoúdi, Finikiá, Períssa, Perívolos, Megalohóri, Kamári, Messariá and Monólithos are smaller, less frequented villages with authentic shops, restaurant & chuches. You will also find wineries in Pyrgos, where you can visit for a tour & wine tasting. Another idea, to appreciate the island without fighting the masses, is to choose a boat excursion to the caldera. Some suggestions are listed below. Choose an excursion with a limited number of guests. There are numerous beaches in Santorini but they tend to pebbly. Check out the blog by Santorini Dave to find out more (see below). Santorini is also for those interested in archaeological history.  Excavations occur in the area called Akrotíri. Planning ahead will help you appreciate the beauty of this island without the frustration of crowds.

When arriving in Santorini, if taking the ferry from Athens, Crete, or other islands, you may arrive in Athinos. It is about 12 km from the center of town. A bus can be taken for a few euros. If you arrive in Santorini by a cruise ship you may be taken to the old port where a cable car, donkey, or walking path is used to reach Fira.

There are many beautiful villages in Santorini. Fira, Imerovigli, and Firostefani are the western most villages on the cliff overlooking the caldera. Fira is the main area of the island and can be quite crowded in high season. Oia (pronounced EE-YA), is the most famous part of the island, especially for the incredible sunsets. It is well known for the beautiful domed churches. You do not have to stay in Oia for the sunset as other western facing villages will give you this wonderful experience as well. One of my favorite places is called Imerovigli, which is less visited but offers these incredible views as well. Check out hotels in this area. (Wikipedia: Santorini)

This is the most obvious hike you can make on the island of Santorini and it will lead you - if you have not discovered them by now - through the sister villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli, going higher up all the time above the caldera.

A very affordable option (less than $250 in fall). Perched on Caldera cliff, in Firostefani Village, the Cycladic-style Agali Houses features a swimming pool and a furnished sun terrace with panoramic views over the sea and the Volcano.

You will not find a more affordable location overlooking the caldera in Santorini. This clean and modern space is very simple but carries a big punch. Can you imagine sipping some Greek wine will viewing the sunset on the terrace?
