Welcome to Rome!
About Rome
Rome, the capital of Italy, is a historic city with a rich heritage spanning nearly three millennia. With over 4.5 million residents, it is the country’s most populous city, located in central-western Italy along the Tiber River. Enclosed within Rome is Vatican City, the world’s smallest independent country, giving Rome the unique distinction of being the capital of two states.
Founded in 753 BC, Rome has earned nicknames such as “The Eternal City” and “Caput Mundi” (Capital of the World). During the Renaissance, it became a major cultural hub and later the birthplace of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, attracting renowned artists, architects, and sculptors who left behind iconic masterpieces.
In modern history, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1871 and retained its status when Italy transitioned to a republic in 1946. Today, it stands as a testament to its enduring influence on art, architecture, and culture.

One of our favorite restaurants in Rome! Last time we were there, we waited in the rain for over an hour and it was so worth it! Homemade pasta, terrific ambiance, and incredible desserts! It is a smaller place, and they do not take reservations. Try it! you will not be dissapointed. We believe they have the best Carbonara in all of Rome, if not Italy.
Our first trip to Rome, we visited this Osteria. It was recommended by a local. They actually make home made pasta in the window! We enjoyed many different types of pasta and had the best Panna Cotta we have ever tasted. We still remember our waiter, Nemo, who was so attentive and kind. We should have gone back during our last trip, so we have to make sure we get there next time in Rome!
One of the most iconic restaurants in Trestavere is Tonnarello. They do not take reservations so try to go early. It is well worth the trip to this wonderful part of Rome. If you cannot get in there are many other options. Be sure to check out The Fork for other recommendations.
The Colosseum is one of the most visited sites in Rome. We wanted to give some tips since it is easy to fall into a tourist trap. The Coloseaam can be extremly busy, especially in the height of summer. It is always smart to get tickets ahead. There are many websites that look the official ticket sales site for the Colloseum but be aware there are groups that put extra charges on tickets or try to sell a tour. The official site is HERE. Check out the Guided Night Tour by Walks of Italy and other types of tours below .
Like the Colosseum, avoid unofficial ticket websites. Click "Explore More" on the official site to review options, book tickets, audio guides, or request a guide. For a personalized experience, consider guides on TripAdvisor, Airbnb Experiences, or Viator.Note: The Sistine Chapel is at the end of the tour, and it’s breathtaking. Though the visit is brief, take your time to appreciate the ceiling’s world-renowned art—it’s worth the long walk to get there!
We often recommend With Locals for good reason: they offer private, affordable, and customizable tours with locals. Choose your guide and experience—whether with an artist, historian, or chef—directly on their website for a perfect match to your interests. Plus, free cancellation ensures flexibility. You'll leave with great memories—and maybe even a new friend!
You must check out Residenza Maritti in the heart of Rome, whether you book through Booking.com or directly. This charming, family run hotel is located right at the edge of the Roman Forum, offering stunning views from both the rooms and the rooftop terrace. Start your day with a delightful breakfast, and in the evening, enjoy a glass of wine while taking in breathtaking views, including the Colosseum. For its exceptional value, Residenza Maritti stands out as one of the best places we’ve stayed in Rome.
We recommend this boutique hotel owned by Marriott. If costs about 75K Marriott points per night. One thing we do is open a card for extra points and choose to stay at Marriott properties so it adds up. We try to add one Marriott property to our excursions to save during our trip. Why not accumulate the points toward something special?
