About Madrid
Madrid is the capital and most-populous city of Spain. The city center is about 3.5 million with about another 3 million in the outskirts of the city. Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the center of both the country. As the capital city of Spain, it is the center of economic and cultural activities. The Presidential Palace also is located in Madrid. Madrid is also home to two world famous football clubs, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
Since Madrid is the center of the country and has a major international airport and excellent train network, it is easy to fly in and travel throughout the country. With high speed train, it is easy to get to places like Barcelona or Seville in a few hours. The most popular landmarks include the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Royal Theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro Park (where you can rent a row boat).Among the many museums there are three art museums: Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum, a museum of modern art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Each museum offers a different collection so it is good to research beforehand to find the best option.
While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. The architecture and environment of the neighborhoods, is what makes it so special. The multitudes of tapas bars and restaurants, all within easy walking distance, makes it a prime place to visit many taverns along the streets to get the best local experience possible.
The shopping, especially around the most famous street, Gran Via, is another great experience! And don’t forget about the food and drink. You have to try a Churro in their special dark chocolate sauce. It is probably unlike anything you have tried. And do try the many wines, that are available from all over the country as well as their special vermouth. I always thought vermouth was a mixer, but in Madrid, most bars and restaurants have it on tap. It is a fortified wine that has richness and goes so well with tapas! Also the cava is amazing. This is a sparkling wine that is so special. the tapas experience is one you will never forget. You can try some different food and drink and it will not drain your wallet. We learned a lot of this by watching James Blick’s Spain Revealed YouTube videos on YouTube. Take a look below and be sure to subscribe. He will take you through the many neighborhoods and give you the best tips on the local experience.
There are actually 21 neighborhoods of Madrid. All are within walking distance (or a few minutes by taxi or subway). Click here for a guide to these neighborhoods. The most commonly known are Sol: Gran Via (one of the most famous and lively streets in Madrid). Plaza de Sol is a wonderful meeting point and is truly the heart of the city. Plaza Major is just north of of Plaza de Sol. The square’s archetecture cannot be missed. Just a little advice about taverns and shops near the plaza as they can cater to tourists but may be more expensive without the best local experience. Very close to Plaza Major is the Mercado de San Miguel. This is a huge market filled with delicacies from the nearby neighborhoods. It can be expensive and crowded. A word of advise is to visit, but make sure you hit the incredible taverns just down the street. Austrias is the neighborhood surrounding the large presidential palace. The grounds are incredible and very local to the center of town. (Wikipedia: Madrid)

If you want to experience authentic Spanish cuisine, you must try Los Montes de Galicia. Galicia is a region in the northwest corner of Spain known for its incredible seafood. It is very difficult to fetch almost all 5 star ratings on Tripadvisor but they certainly come close. From the reviews alone, it is worth checking out. Click Explore More.
The best expereince while in Madrid is to partake in tapas. It is more than just the food, but the shairing and community. Meson del Champion offers the most amazing mushroom tapas I have ever tasted. The croquettes and roasted Padron peppers are some of the best in Madrid as well.
If you watch James Blick from Spain Revealed videos on Youtube you will find that he touts this taverna for its vermouth and tapas. When we went to Madrid in 2019 we took his advise and we were not disappointed. In the US we only add vermouth to drinks but in Madrid, you will often find it on tap. It is a fortified wine, served on ice and refreshing!
One of the best well known place for churros in Madrid is San Gines. It has been in business since 1894 and it is a must visit on your next trip to Madrid. If you have never eaten Spanish Churros you are in for a treat! The pastry is light and is served with a thick chocolate sauce for dipping. It is not considered a dessert but a snack any time of day. It is open 24 hours, so you can even visit after a night of tapas.
We recommend some kind of tour for a chance to meet locals and get first hand knowledge of a city. We love "With Locals" because you can choose a local for an affordable private experience. Another option is Devour Tours, a company founded by one of our favorite bloggers, James Blick, and really worth a try (www.devourtours.com).

There are many beautiful parks scattered throughout Madrid. All are within walking distance. The Prado Museum is five minutes away and the Royal Palace is about 30 minutes walking distance. This park is a great way to get away from the crowds and enjoy a beautiful day on the lake! Other places to visit on foot (free) are Gran Via, Playa Mayor, and the Royal Palace. Tripdavisor has other great ideas on what to do in Madrid.
This is an incredible rental. We stayed here in 2019 and It was worth every penny. Look at this view? there is a jacuzzi right on the terrace and the apartment is modern and lovely. If you have 4-6 in your party, and can split the cost, it is worth a look!
The reviews on this Airbnb are off the charts. It is close to everything and perfect for 2-3 travelers. The interior is stunning and the neighborhood is inviting. Be sure to check out more on this accommodation. One of the most affordable in Madrid. We suggest Airbnb and Booking.com for accomodation.

Who better to guide us through this amazing food tradition, than James Blick. Before we left for Spain a few years ago, we watched just about every video on Spain. There are so many new things to try in Madrid! We thought Vermouth was something you mixed in another drink. In the taverns and tapas bars, they often serve Vermouth on tap. This video will explain more, but it is a fortified wine that goes wonderfully with tapas. Other great options are Cava (sparkling wine) and Rioja, Tempranillo, and others. Read great article on the best Vermouth bars by Culture Trip.

Espadrilles!
Casa Hernanz
Make room in your suitcase for the most authentic footwear of Spain: Espadrilles. I bought 4 pairs while there. Here is a tip: take a photo of the shoes you like in the window and show that to the clerk behind the counter as they may not speak English. Be prepared if you go in the afternoon because there may be a big line, but it is so worth it! We bought many pairs to bring back.
Flamenco is originally from Andalusia, in the south, but many performers come to Madrid so if you cannot make it to Andalusia, it is worth the experience. Click Explore More for a list of options. Do keep in mind that some shows can be touristy, so look at reviews and find the best option.
