About Barcelona & Catalunya

Barcelona is a city in Northeastern Spain. It is the capital of the region of Catalunya. Its population is almost 5 million people in the city and surrounding area. It offers so much for visitors, with the works of Antoni Gaudi, including Sagrada Familia,  the Gothic Quarter,Las Ramblas, the Boqueria Market,  and the stunning sandy beach on the Mediterranean.

Architect and designer Antoni Gaudi left his mark on the city of Barcelona are over 10 buildings designed by  Gaudi in Barcelona. His style is gothic with Art Nouveau. He was hired to work on the Basilica of the Holy  Family (Sagrada Familia) after the first architect quit. Gaudi was a pioneer in his field using color, texture, and movement in ways never before imagined. Gaudi devoted the rest of his life toward the project. In 1926, when Gaudi passed away, only about ⅓ of the project was complete. It was put on hold during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. It is still under construction to this day. The goal for completion is 2026, one century after his death. It is a marvel in and out. Park Guell,

Another must see property is Park Guell. It was also designed by Antoni Gaudi between the years of 1900 and 1914. The shapes and colors offer a different perspective in the midst of the park. The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. The curves of the serpent bench form a number of enclaves, creating a more social atmosphere. Gaudí incorporated many motifs of Catalan nationalism, and elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry, into the Park. If you plan to visit either Sagrada or Park Guell, especially  in summer, be sure to arrive early or go later in the day. Sometimes the wait can be over two hours. The tickets can be purchased ahead for both locations. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to get there as public transportation may take longer.

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter has a look and feel unlike any other old town city in Europe The architecture is gothic and the area runs from the famous street, La Rampla to the beach on the coast. It is very easy to walk through this area to admire the architecture. Three are numerous tapas bars and stores in this part of town.

The beach comprises the western side of the city and runs almost 5 kilometers. The beaches are wide, yellow and sandy. There are many restaurants that are even actually on the beach. It is easy to plan a variety of activities while in Barcelona.
