About Athens

Athens, Greece, a city with a history that spans nearly 3400 years, stands as both the capital and largest city of the country. Renowned as the cradle of Western Civilization and the birthplace of democracy, Athens is a multifaceted metropolis that today serves as Greece’s financial, maritime, political, and cultural epicenter.

During the summer months, Athens comes alive with visitors, and while the crowds can be daunting, knowing where to focus your time can make all the difference in your experience.

The city’s unmistakable heart, the Acropolis, graces the skyline and can be admired from various vantage points throughout Athens. Surrounding this iconic landmark are a multitude of neighborhoods, each with its own unique personality.

Plaka, perhaps the most well-known neighborhood, teems with souvenir shops and tourists. However, don’t be deterred by its popularity; many of its restaurants offer authentic Greek cuisine. The absence of traffic allows for leisurely strolls through its charming streets, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. For a more serene and cultural experience, consider a visit to Anafiotika, where the architecture resembles that of the Greek islands, and the restaurants and shops offer great value.

Psyri is a hip neighborhood that blends old-world charm with newer bars and restaurants. Monastiraki, although often bustling, resembles a lively flea market with a wealth of shops. Syntagma, home to the former Royal Palace, boasts high-end shops along one of Europe’s most expensive streets. Here, you can witness the changing of the guard by the Greek Presidential Guard in Syntagma plaza.

Kolonaki, like Syntagma, is an upscale area of Athens, replete with high-end shops, restaurants, and galleries. On the other hand, Gazi exudes a modern ambiance, serving as the city’s design and art district, known for its vibrant bars and clubs.

As you explore Athens, you’ll discover a city where ancient history seamlessly blends with contemporary life.
