About Mykonos

Mykonos is an island that is part of the Cyclades, which lies between other island of this group, Tinos, Syrols, Paros, & Naxos. It is about 85 square kilometers with about 10,000 residents. The main town is also called Mykonos or is referred to as Chora (which means main town). The sun shines about 300 days a year and the best time to visit is between April and September. It is most well known for the bars, clubs and nightlife.  It is also known as ”the island of the winds”. Which brings windsurfers to this island. The hotels are incredible with wonderful views of the sea and white, sandy beaches. It is easy to reach by ferry from Athens or any other island in the Cyclades. Since they are fairly close, it is possible to see a number of islands in a span of a week or two. Check out the Ferry Hopper website to start planning!

There are many villages on Mykonos. The most popular is the main town, Mykonos. Venice is just next to the port town and is most well known for night life. It has iconic blue and white homes lined up along the coast. Platys Giolos is an area very near to the airport with some nice resorts and beaches. Little Megali Ammos  is only a little distance from the old port town but offers a nice local, less crowded atmosphere. It is also very close to the Kato Milli, the famous windmills on the island. A hidden gem, is Paradise Beach, which is about 6 km from Mykonos town. It offers sandy beaches and a few boutique hotels, outside of the main town. Check out the beach for the day, or look into some of the amazing boutique hotels, including Super Paradise Suites. There are many beaches on the island and if it is important to be close to nightlife or certain sites, choose your accommodations accordingly. Be sure to visit the Mykonos Brewing Company. Started in 2017 by five local guys, it offers a tour and taproom. Read more below or visit the site mikonu.gr

Santorini & Other Cyclades Islands

Cyclades Islands Guide

As you begin planning which islands to visit in Greece it can be overwhelming! We suggest you take an island group and stick with that as ferries usually travel only within that group of islands. It is more challenging to go from one island in a group to another. Also determine whether you plan to fly or take a high speed ferry from Athens. Using some of the resources below, including ferry times between island, will help tremendously.

Depending on how long you have, we suggest 3 days on each island you choose (especially with travel time by ferry). we also suggest flying out of an island airport, like Santorini with a layover in London, for example to save time from returning to Athens.

We focus on the Cyclades Islands as it contains one of the most iconic in all of Greece, Santorini. If you have limited time, check out the islands and ferry times below to plan your itinerary. Taking these few steps are going to make your trip spectacular!

This website by Visit Greece is one of the most helpful as you decide which islands to visit in the Cyclades. You will get more information on each island and suggestions on activities and more. Click Explore More for the MOST COMPREHENSIVE guide on all of the Cyclades Islands.
